In a ceremony that took place on the steps of the UNLPam, the rector of the House of Higher Studies, Oscar Alpa, accompanied by the Minister of Health, Mario Kohan, and by the Minister of Education, Marcela Feuerschvenger, officially welcomed the 740 students who began to walk their university path.

“We have to thank Governor Sergio Ziliotto, who accompanied this project from the first moment. This is the culmination of many years of work. The Faculty of Medical Sciences is 2 years and 10 months old, but long before its creation there was this dream that we have been able to materialize,” Alpa said.
“It is a very significant day, because we took a historic step. From now on we are going to train doctors in our province. It is something that will transcend the times,” he added.
“This decision corresponds to the roots of the founding mandate of the University, back in 1958. It is a political, social and academic decision,” he said.
Alpa added that “knowledge is a right, and not a privilege as some claim’. The rector said that the career will have a preventive and territorial orientation. ‘We are going to think about the patient standing and not lying down, training doctors with social responsibility and sensitivity,’ he said. “La Pampa needs professionals committed to the territory, to the people and to the public system.”, he concluded.

The Minister of Health, Mario Kohan, welcomed the students, making it clear that medicine “is a complex, but exciting career”. In his speech, he remembered the commitment of the Provincial Government to facilitate the tasks of teachers and students who require his collaboration.
“This historic milestone that occurs today is a consequence of the articulated work between the University, the Province, the municipal states and the community,” he said.
Kohan highlighted the objective of “generating a qualified human resource with knowledge of the territory. Along these lines, he said that ‘we have a province with more than 143 thousand square kilometers of surface, with different regions and it is essential that doctors have a deep sense of belonging.”
“Future generations will enjoy the benefits of this decision. This is a historic foundational act. From now on, we will have doctors who know their people and their community,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Yamila Maggiorano, highlighted the importance of the event, pointing out that “many vocations postponed today can be realized without leaving the province.”
Magiorano explained that the data of those enrolled reflect a diverse profile: the average age is 27 years and the median is 23, with a significant presence of adults. About 250 students work and about 400 have children, which represents an organizational challenge for the university. 92% of those enrolled are from La Pampa, mainly from Santa Rosa, and 19 are already nursing professionals.
The degree will have 5,500 hours of training distributed in 28 subjects over six years. February and March will be key months, with mandatory bimonthly subjects to continue with the annual course.
