Given the presence of low temperatures, the Ministry of Health of the Government of La Pampa reminded the public of the prevention measures to take into account to avoid possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

This is a highly toxic gas for people and animals. It enters the body through the lungs and from there passes into the bloodstream, displacing oxygen. The lack of oxygen primarily affects the brain and heart. It can cause severe poisoning, even death.

It is called the invisible killer because:
#

  • It has no odor
  • It has no color
  • It has no taste
  • It does not irritate the eyes or nose.

Prevention:
#

It is essential to maintain continuous ventilation of rooms during the day and night, even in the presence of low temperatures.

Installations Inspection
#

  1. Check the correct installation and proper functioning of appliances: water heaters, gas stoves, wood-burning stoves, fireplaces, boilers, cookers, heaters, lanterns, internal combustion engines in cars and motorcycles, and braziers.

  2. Pay special attention to the exterior vents of ovens, water heaters, stoves, and boilers to ensure they are clear and in good condition.

  3. Have your gas installations inspected by a certified professional who can identify and correct any malfunctions in the carbon monoxide source.

  4. There are several signs that indicate an appliance is not working properly:

  5. Check that the flame on stoves and burners is always blue. An orange flame indicates a malfunction.

  6. The most noticeable sign of a gas pipe that is not properly installed or sealed is a black stain on the ceiling and wall (along the pipe’s path).

  7. Do not use the oven or stovetop burners to heat the room.

  8. Do not operate combustion engines (generators, chainsaws, etc.) in enclosed rooms, basements, or garages.

  9. Do not leave your car engine running when the garage is closed. If your garage is connected to the rest of your home, close the doors.

Symptoms
#

The main danger of this type of poisoning is that in many cases the person is unaware of the symptoms, which can vary from person to person.

Symptoms may include
#

  1. Headache.

  2. Nausea or vomiting.

  3. Dizziness, accompanied by fatigue.

  4. Lethargy or confusion.

  5. Fainting or loss of consciousness.

  6. Visual disturbances.

  7. Seizures.

If you suspect you are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, or if you need to assist a victim, it is recommended to remove the person from inside the house; open windows and doors of the house to ventilate the rooms; turn off gas appliances and contact 107 or go to the nearest Health Center or Hospital.
